The Legend

Thousands of years ago traders in Central Asia made a priceless discovery - a valley where gold nuggets were both plentiful and easily found, lying among rocks on open ground. Paleontologists tell us that the same geological forces that uncovered these subterranean gold deposits also revealed rich fossil beds. Early prospectors probably found the remains of dinosaurs as they searched for gold.

One such dinosaur was about the size of a lion, but had a prominent beak, birdlike talons, and laid eggs in nests, giving rise to a legend so convincing that it persisted well into medieval times. The Griffin, so named by wary gold hunters, was said to be keen-eyed and fiercely protective, not only of its young, but also of the gold it was believed to gather and hoard in its nests.
